Alexis smiled as the woods came into view. "See, I told you that we would get to the forest in no time!"

~~~
Vincent's eyebrows rose slightly as he took in the dark forest warily. "Yeah...why did I follow you again?" He asked, glancing at her with hardened eyes.
~~~

Alexis grinned at him, "Because you wanted to go on an adventure with me."

~~~
Vincent gave her a deadpan look. "Yeah, right..." He sighed heavily, tucking a few strand of his hair behind his ears. "So where is this place you wanted to show me anyways?" He asked, shifting slightly out of nerves.
~~~

Alexis turned around and motioned towards a dark grove in the treeline that was darker than most.

"In the middle of the forest. There is this completely abandoned house that a whole family just packed up and left from. Everything is still as it was, including rotten food."

~~~
"Weird." He remarked, following her carefully. "Why do your parents let you come out here in the middle of the night?" He asked after a moment of silence.
~~~

Alexis stopped for a moment before going on, "Because they trust me. Besides, it's the weekend and nothing ever happens around here." She grinned before pulling out a taser, "Also, they let me carry this and my phone around for protection. Just in case, you know?"

~~~
He cast the taser a wary look as she brandished it. "Yeah, I guess I do." He replied, sounding cautious as he carefully picked his way through the trees. "Why do they let you carry a taser?" He asked.
~~~

Alexis smiled as she hid the taser in her pocket once more, "Because I walk to school, and a girl's gotta have some protection, ya know?"

She suddenly stopped and pointed to a thick of trees that stood out from the others as they came closer. "Ya see that? That's where the house is at."

~~~
Vincent eyed the trees sharply. "Cool. Are we going to see it, or did you just lure me out here to kill me?" He asked, a sarcastic edge to his tone.
~~~

Alexis gave him a dark smirk as she led him further into the woods, "Well, if you keep on being a sourpuss, I just might."

She suddenly stopped in a clearing however, as a rickety old house came into view. Despite the dense shrouding of trees around it, the house itself was covered in vines and other sorts of overgrowth.

~~~
Vincent stopped just a bit behind her, glancing from her to the house before looking intently at the overgrowth and ruinous state of the building. "You sure it's safe for us to go in there?" He asked, his voice monotone.
~~~

Alexis turned to him and nodded. "Yup! I've been in here plenty of times!"

~~~
Vincent sighed heavily before rolling his eyes and following her inside. "Great." He said, his tone sarcastic.
~~~

Vincent was greeted with the sight of an old fashioned entry way, complete with peeling flowery wallpaper and old dolls scattered about. The stench of old meat hung in the air as Alexis lead him through the front hall.

~~~
Vincent cast a wary glance towards the dolls, a chill running up his spine as he entered the building. He wrinkled his nose in distaste at the scent, but continued to follow Alexis. No turning back now.
~~~

Alexis smiled as she led him further into the house, taking him through the kitchen area. The entire kitchen was covered in a thin layer of dust and the smell of rotting meat was revealed to be ancient strips of bacon marinating in grease. Dusty pancakes were stacked up high as an open bottle of syrup was covered with dead flies at the lid. The stove and the oven were both old and rusty.

~~~
Vincent looked around the room, simultaneously disgusted and fascinated by the sight.
~~~

Alexis giggled as she spun around, grabbing his hand briefly and pulling him towards the living room, "See, I told you, they just up and left!"

~~~
He snatched his hand away from hers and gave her a warning glare before following. "You were right." He admitted, smirking slightly. "It's weird to see something like this."
~~~

Alexis' smile became even wider as she led him to the living room, which revealed itself to be littered with more toys and an old tv box set, completely untouched. However, that was not the most unsettling thing about the place. The strange thing was that the tv was still on, portraying nothing but static through a dirty screen.

~~~
Vincent drank in the eerie scene, staring at the TV. The static reflected off of his gray eyes as he looked. "Why is that still on?" He asked, gesturing to the TV. "Shouldn't the power be cut off to this house?"
~~~

Alexis' eyes were lit up with an almost manic gleam as she drew in closer to him in unabated excitement, "Yeah, you would think that...but no. The water still runs, and the electricity still works! It's insane! But that's what makes it awesome."

Alexis grinned as she moved away from him and gestured towards the stairs, the glow gone from her eyes. "Ready to see what's upstairs?"

~~~
Vincent cast a glance around the room one last time, then nodded to her, a grim countenance upon his face.
~~~

Alexis giggled at his dour expression before taking him by the hand and leading him up the stairs. "I know you don't like me touching you, but I'm doing it to guide you up the staircase. There are some rotted floorboard here and there, and I don't want to have you falling into the basement."

~~~
Vincent made a small noise in the back of his throat, but made no other protestations to her leading him up the stairs.
~~~

Alexis carefully weaved in and out from certain weak-spots in the old wood as she lead him up to the top of the steps. The first thing to be noticed was that there wasn't much of an upstairs at all, save for a single narrow hallway. More peeling wallpaper and broken scattered toys greeted then as she lead him to the first room, the child's room. "Now this is where things get REALLY weird, so prepare yourself." She said in a whispery tone, leading him into the room. "All of the rooms will have this, by the way..." She trailed as she creaked open the door to reveal a little girl's room. Pictures of a short, brown haired overalls-wearing girl with a 70's hairstyle were all up along the walls as Alexis made room for Vincent to poke his head through. Dolls of all sorts and kinds were scattered about on the floor. But it was the gas mask on the pink frilly bed, however, that Alexis was mentioning.

~~~
Vincent shuddered as a chill crawled up his spine, his eyes fixating on the dead, cold, empty ones of the mask. "Why is that there?" He asked in a harsh whisper, not daring to raise his voice any louder than that.
~~~

Alexis just shook her head as she sent Vincent a winning smile, "Who knows? My guess is that maybe they left in fear of an atomic bomb being dropped...But that wouldn't make much sense considering the time period and that they left their masks here. There are some clues about what might have happened in the basement downstairs, though..."

Alexis shrugged before stepping out of the room and leading him to the next one, this one belonging to a little boy. More toys and whatnot were scattered around the place as pictures of a curly-haired, blonde, freckled little boy in a striped shirt and shorts were hanging about the room. The entire room had the theme of airplanes, and model airplanes hung overhead. While being a polar opposite to the sister's room, it shared the same eerie gas mask placed neatly on the red and blue trimmed bed.

~~~
Vincent picked his way through the room, careful not to disturb anything as he made his way to the bed. He inspected the mask, his eyes narrowed in concentration as he memorized every inch of the object. He then walked back to the girl's room, only giving Alexis a glance before his disappeared inside and went to the other mask, studying it as well. "They're completely identical..." He murmured as he straightened up from beside her bed and made his way back to Alexis. "They're completely identical." He repeated, clenching his hands by his sides as the hair on his neck stood on end.
~~~

Alexis nodded slowly as she made her way down to the farthest room, motioning him to come along. However, just as she reached for the door, she stopped. "Now listen, most other people I try to bring here never even make it up the stairs before they bail, and I want you to promise that you won't chicken out now. I haven't even shown you the attic yet, and that's probably my favorite part of the entire house... But first, I must show you the parent's room. Now you're older than me and don't seem like a wimp, so I want you to prepare yourself."

Alexis took a deep breath and pushed open the door. Almost immediately, the reason that she tried to prepare him became obvious. Red writing was scribbled all along the walls as Alexis led the way inside. The angry scribbles and scratches covered everything, including the desktops, mirrors, pictures, and even the bed. The writings themselves were almost incomprehensible as both dust and time had faded them. However, out of all of the madness, one thing that was to be expected remained; two adult sized gas masks, set neatly on either side of the bed.

~~~
Vincent took a sharp breath as unbidden fear seized his shoulders, making him tense and freeze for a moment before he shook it off, carefully entering the room and looking around with a morbid interest. He ran a finger gently along one of the lines and inspected the residue that came off. "You think it's blood?" He asked as he looked back at her, his gray eyes seeming to glow in the darkness.
~~~

Alexis gave him a grim look as she shook her head. "No way...it's just red paint. If you smell it, you'll still be able to pick up the scent of nail polish. " She grinned at him, "Besides, don't ya think I would've already checked to see?" She smiled as she came closer to him, "There's no way I would take anyone here if I thought it was blood."

~~~
He gave her a smirk as he rubbed the paint off of his fingertips, the dust disintegrating and falling to the floor. "I wouldn't put it past you." He said as he gave her a look.
~~~

Alexis grinned as she came up and lightly smacked him on the side. "You've got a sense of humor, I like that! " She grinned as she turned her attention towards the attic space, eyeing the dangling string that would pull down the staircase leading up. "Now listen, you weigh more than I do, and thus, this next part might be a bit tricky. I'll go up on the pull-down wooden staircase first, and make sure it's safe enough for you in the first place, and then you can follow. I don't want you getting hurt."

~~~
Vincent nodded, his eyes betraying his slight bemusement at her last statement. "Alright then." He said quietly, moving out of the way so she could pull the staircase down.
~~~

Alexis sent him one last smile before reaching up and yanking down hard on the pullstring, causing the staircase to come down hard. A loud bang was heard all throughout the house as Alexis coughed in the shower of dust that rained down on her. Slowly and surely, she climbed the rickety staircase safely before rummaging around in the attic and finding the light switch. A dim glow slowly illuminated the attic as Alexis popped her head over the side of the staircase and signalled for him to come on up. "This is the part I really wanted you to see!"

~~~
Vincent hesitated slightly before cautiously making his way up the staircase, keeping his eyes trained on hers as he did so.
~~~

Alexis smiled as she reached down and helped pull Vincent up onto the attic floor. Despite a table covered with a tarp, there was really nothing else to be seen in the room. Sure, there were dusty old boxes full of knickknacks and whatnot, but it was clear that the covered table was what Alexis had been eager to display. She held her position in front of it as she waited for him to come closer.

"Behold! The miniature city!" She said as she pulled the tarp off with a dramatic flourish to reveal a miniature of the very town that they lived in. The accuracy and painstaking detail in the buildings and cars were spectacular as tiny little streetlamps illuminated everything.

~~~
Vincent approached it, looking extremely interested as he inspected the model with the same intensity he had done with the masks earlier. "How did they do this?" He asked quietly as he took in every single detail of the model.
~~~

Alexis just smiled and shrugged as she watched him look it over. It filled her with an unmistakable joy to see this boy taking an interest in what she found fascinating. "So...what do you think? Was following me to this house worth it?"

~~~
He merely glanced up from his inspection, giving her a smirk. "Yeah, it was." He replied, already back to studying the model intensely.
~~~

Alexis grinned in satisfaction before moving away from the model set, instead focusing her interest on some dusty old clothes. She grinned to herself when she pulled out a fluffy feathered purple hat. She gave it a good shake to clear the dust off before dancing over to Vincent and lightly throwing it on top of his head.

~~~
He made a startled noise, jumping and swatting the hat off of his head. He gave it a good look before giving Alexis an unamused look. "Not funny." He said, sighing as he picked up the hat and raised one eyebrow at her. "Seriously?" He deadpanned as he inspected the hat warily.
~~~

Alexis grinned slyly, "What? It's purple, and I figured that you'd like it."

~~~
Vincent shook his head slightly, tossing the hat back to her. "You really are a stalker." He remarked as he went back to looking at the model.
~~~

Alexis grinned, "Well yeah. I waited outside your window for 4 hours for you to finish your stinking homework. And I followed you home before that!"

~~~
He sighed and tensed unconsciously as he processed the fact that he'd have to deal with a 12 year old girl with stalkerish tendencies following him everywhere.
~~~

Alexis sighed as she walked over to the tiny window in the attic space, not facing him as she spoke. "Look...I know I probably seem like a desperate weirdo to you...but the truth is that I'm bored and lonely. I have so much I want to do with and show to people, but no one listens. You listened and acknowledged me...and that's why I hung around. The things I did tonight...they were admittedly over-the-top, but I didn't know how else to continue holding your attention." She turned around and faced him, her eyes serious for the first time since meeting him, "Look, I'm not one who normally beats around the bush, so I'm just going to come right out and say it. Do you want to hang out more? After this, I mean?"

~~~
Vincent froze, not knowing how to respond. "Um..." He said, glancing around as he stalled for time. "I guess...I mean, if I have any free time..." He muttered, looking away from her.
~~~

Alexis' smile became brilliant as she suddenly rushed forward and spun Vincent around in a hug. "Oh thank you, Vincent! We're going to have so much fun!"

~~~
Vincent stiffened, making a small noise of protest as he broke free from her embrace, watching her with unreadable eyes. "Yeah, sure..." He said after a moment, shaking his head and sighing.
~~~

Alexis grinned back at him as she pranced about, "This has got to be the best day of my life!"

~~~
Vincent watched her, moving away from her uncomfortably. "Yeah." He responded, not sounding very enthusiastic.
~~~

Alexis grinned as she turned around and pulled him forwards. "Come on! I almost forgot to show you the basement."

She stopped and slowly made her way down the ladder before grinning back up at him and motioning for him to come down. "Come on! It's safe!"

~~~
Vincent sighed and made his way down the stairs, standing next to her. "So...is the basement the same as all of the other areas?" He asked, looking at her with slight curiosity.
~~~

Alexis smiled as she lead him up to the door leading to the basement. "You better believe it!" She said with a grin as she slowly turned the knob and descended. "Now, keep a hold of me, because you don't want to trip and fall."

~~~
Vincent hesitated before gripping her shoulder firmly and following her down the stairs cautiously.
~~~

Alexis frowned as she carefully felt her way down the staircase, sighing with relief when she finally felt the string that would allow her to turn on the bulb. "Alright, prepare for some light." She warned as she pulled down on the string, washing the basement in a pale yellow glow.

The basement itself was mostly empty-what with some rusty old tools scattered about on a workbench. Papers and plans littered the table as Alexis brought him over. "Admittedly, there isn't much to see here...but at least there's these things." She said as she motioned towards the papers. "Some of them are for building plans...but others are actually diary entries of a sort. Come and see."

~~~
Vincent answered her beckoning, moving over to where she stood. "Diary entries?" He asked, frowning slightly in curiosity.
~~~

Alexis nodded in fascination as she gently plucked up a sheet of yellowed paper. "They're not much in terms of helping us figure out why this family just up and left, but they do give you some info on what was going on when they did."

~~~
Vincent took the paper from her, handling it gently. His gray eyes scanned the paper as he read, squinting slightly in the dim light.
~~~

The writing was sloppy and childish as it read:

November 14, 1971

Today I have decided to break all of my dolls. I don't like how they stare at me, and they are ugly. Mommy said I shouldn't have broken them and she put me in the basement- But I don't care. I am happy. The dolls can't look at me any more.

~~~
Vincent smirked slightly at the writing. "Well, she got one thing right; those dolls are creepy." He said as he kept reading.
~~~

Alexis nodded before she handed him another page.

The writing was the same as before

November 20, 1971

Daddy left today. Mommy is crying. They were arguing a lot last night and it kept my brother Thommy up all night. I tried asking what's wrong, but mommy won't tell me. She says Daddy is just going on vacation. But if he's going on vacation, then why would he leave without us? That's silly.

~~~
Vincent's eyes darkened as he read on, the seriousness of the girl's situation getting to him.
~~~

Alexis sighed as she handed him another page. "It gets worse."

November 21, 1971

'Mommy isn't talking anymore. She just stays up in her room and won't come down. I had to make breakfast myself and I burnt my fingers trying to make bacon. I cried, but Mommy woudn't come down. Does mommy not love me anymore?'

Some tear stains were noticeable on the paper as the letter continued.

Thommy just stayed at the door all day and screamed for her to come down. But I guess she couldn't hear....I'm scared. What do I do?

~~~
Vincent's countenance turned grim as he read more of the hidden story of this place. Wordlessly, he handed back the read papers, holding his hand out for the next one.
~~~

Alexis nodded solemnly as she handed him the next one.

November 22, 1971

I don't feel so good. It hurts to breathe. I woke up gasping for air. But at least Mommy is back out now. She's packing bags to go somewhere. Maybe on vacation with daddy? When I asked if she would take us with her, she just nodded. So I think she will. She bandaged up my fingers, too, so I guess everything is going to be ok again. But she's coughing...and Thommy is too.

~~~
Vincent frowned slightly; what could have caused this descent of their mental and physical health?
~~~

Alexis sighed as she handed him the last entry. This handwriting was much more rushed than the last entries.

November 23, 1971

It really hurts to breathe. But I don't want to put on the scary face. It's hot in there, and it makes me sweaty. I tried to tell mommy I didn't want it, but she screamed at me to do it. I'm scared. Is this why daddy left? To stop from getting a cough?

I'm getting tired, and mommy is saying that we are going to leave. I didn't see Thommy today. I looked all over, but I couldn't find him. Mommy says he's at a friend's house, but Thommy doesn't have many friends. None who live close, anyway.

Why is mommy lying?

~~~
Vincent's eyes hardened as he laid down the last entry, looking at Alexis with an unreadable expression on his face. "Are you sure it's safe to be here?" He asked, his voice a low monotone.
~~~

Alexis just gave him a look as she shrugged. "I've been here many times before this, and never have I been affected. Whatever it was that drove them from here, it's most likely worn off or gone by now."

~~~
Vincent nodded in response, but glanced around warily, the hairs on the back of his neck rising in response to the creeping sense of paranoia that clung to him.
~~~

Alexis sighed as an awkward silence briefly settled throughout the house before looking up. "Well, I've pretty much shown you everything...So you ready to go back?"

~~~
Vincent nodded in agreement,. "Yeah, I do." After a brief pause, he added, "Thanks for showing me this." His tone was casual, yet he glanced away when he said those words.
~~~

Alexis smiled up at him as she nodded. "No problem! The pleasure was all mine." She grabbed his hand as she turned out the lights and led him back up the staircase. "So...tomorrow's Saturday, do you have anything to do?"

~~~
"Um...no, I don't think so." Vincent said as he fought the urge to pull away from her. "Why?" He asked.
~~~

Alexis smiled back at him as she made it up to the top of the staircase. "Because I want to hang out with you again. Did you know that there's a small river in these woods?"

~~~
Vincent shook his head. "I didn't even know these woods existed until you told me." He said, giving her a contemplating look as he stood beside her, letting go of her hand.
~~~

Alexis gave him a look of disbelief. "Woah, seriously?! Dude, you haven't lived!"

~~~
Vincent smirked in amusement. "Yeah, I know." He said, sarcasm weaving through his tone.
~~~

Alexis laughed and lightly punched him in the shoulder as she lead him out of the house into the moonlit night. "Anyways, you would do good to wear some clothes that you can get dirty tomorrow, cause we're gonna go 'splorin' in the forest!"

~~~
"Oh yaaay." He said unenthusiastically, smirking as he returned the teasing gesture. "That's what I've always wanted to do."
~~~

Alexis laughed before pulling out her phone, "Aw geez, it's 1:30..." She sighed as she gave him a quick worried glance. "Alright, what time will you be ready tomorrow?"

~~~
He thought a moment before shaking his head slightly. "I don't really know...the same time I met you here today, I guess."
~~~

Alexis made a face as she considered the options, "Well...tell you what, I'll be over by your house at 10:00, and we'll go from there. Be ready."

~~~
Vincent nodded. "Alright. I will." He said quietly as they made their way out of the forest. However, just as he turned away from her to head home, he stopped momentarily. "Hey...Alexis."
~~~

Alexis smiled knowingly as she stopped, "Yeah?"

~~~
Vincent smiled slightly as he took in a breath. "Tonight...was fun. Thank you..." he said as he turned his head to look at her, his grey eyes softening.
~~~

Alexis only nodded and grinned as she turned around to look at him. "Trust me, Vincent. The pleasure was all mine."
